Communique Issued at the Maiden Convocation of Assembly of Old Students and Alumni Associations of Western Nigeria

Maiden Convocation of Assembly of Old Students/Alumni Associations, Western Nigeria, Held on Tuesday, 12th December, 2017 at the
DLK Events Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

THEME: SCHOOLS OF THE FUTURE NOW!

1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1      The Convocation of Assembly of Old Students/Alumni Association was convened by the Educational Initiative for Development in Western Nigeria (EIFDW) for the effective mobilisation of Old Students towards the delivery of the objectives of the Campaign for Alma Mater Endowments, which is the restoration of our schools to their glorious past. In this regard, common problems affecting all schools, especially in South West of Nigeria, were extensively discussed and lasting solutions proffered.

1.2     Mr. Adebowale Thompson, the Managing Trustee of EIFDW read the welcome   address and brief introduction of the Convocation titled “Why We Are Here”.

1.3    Three Papers were presented by Guest Speakers:
Needs Assessment of our Public Primary and Secondary Schools:
Prof. (Mrs.) Oluyemisi Obilade, the Vice Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED);
Foreign Partnerships for Alumni Intervention in Alma Maters:
Mr. David Ukagwu, Head, DFID, Lagos Office & South West Regional Coordinator;
Optimizing the Diaspora Advantage:
Chief Sunday Oduntan, Past President, Abeokuta Grammar School Old Students’ Association, UK Branch.

1.4     A report on the outcome of a Mathematics Boot Camp was also presented by Mr. Tunde Yadeka, an Old Boy of Loyola College, Ibadan, on innovative instructional methods to encourage interest and better learning.

1.5     Goodwill messages were delivered by dignitaries from six (6) participating States including distinguished Old Students, Presidents of State Community Development Councils and decorated International Sports Personalities.

1.6     In an address to declare the Convocation open, the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun CON,  FCA, observed that it is apt that Ogun State being the cradle of civilization in Nigeria, should host the Maiden Convocation. His Excellency re-emphasised the importance of Education to the growth and development of any nation. He therefore encouraged participants to remain steadfast as vanguards for the growth of Education in South Western Nigeria in particular and the nation as a whole. He pledged his Administration’s continued support for this common objective – as typified by the creation of the Donor Relations Office (Education). The Governor was represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota.

Press Release: Educational Initiative for Development in Western Nigeria Holds Maiden Convocation of Assembly of Old Students and Alumni Associations

The Educational Initiative for Development in Western Nigeria (EIFDW), a Non-Governmental Organization in Educational Sector holds its Maiden Convocation of an Assembly of Old Students/Alumni Associations of Western Nigeria on its flagship project, Campaign for Alma Mater Endowments. The theme of the convocation is: Schools of the Future NOW! Products of the Past, Builders of the Future.

The Convocation of Assembly of Old Students’ Associations which is slated for Tuesday 12th December, 2017 is focused on the assessment of needs in crucial areas of the Education sector across the Southwest of Nigeria and recommendations to support the recovery process from ailing conditions for a brighter future. The convocation will have in attendance stakeholders all over the Six (6) Southwest States from different walks of life. These include organized groups like Old Students’ Association, ANCOPSS, AOPSHON; Youth Groups like the Boys Scout, Red Cross, and School Sports Federation amongst others.

The event which will hold at the DLK Events Centre, Abiola Way, Abeokuta starting by 10am, will come up with the modalities for Civil Societies’ interventions and support for the revival of the Education Sector in Southwest Nigeria, starting at the Primary School level.
